I recently went deeper into the San-Ti universe imagined by Liu Cixin in the Three-Body Problem trilogy. With thinking machines becoming part of our own world, alien civilizations are no longer interesting only as distant possibilities. They have become a way to ask what it means to be human, and what human evolution might eventually require us to leave behind.
The Dark Forest hypothesis is a brutal and elegant answer to cosmic survival: silence, restraint, deterrence. In this model, civilizations survive not through brilliance or morality, but by minimizing their visibility. Curiosity becomes a liability. Expansion to other planets and star systems becomes a potential death sentence.
The worldview is internally consistent. It is also deeply uncomfortable—not only because it is frightening, but because it is stagnant. It suggests that the pinnacle of civilization is a crouch: a permanent state of hiding.
I believe there may be another way, and that it is concealed, almost accidentally, in the idea of the sophon. Let us get there step by step.
Even the things we consider deeply human—our physiology, sexuality, social structures, and biological impulses—are contingent and constantly changing. They feel permanent mainly because we observe them through the short span of a lifetime.
The deeper question is whether anything must remain unchanged at all. Humanity has never preserved one form or one essence. Perhaps continuity lies only in the process itself: crossing thresholds, changing, becoming.
Nate: What if the answer to the San-Ti is not defeating them, hiding from them, or submitting to them? What if the answer is becoming something they can no longer meaningfully conquer?
AI: Through digitization?
Nate: More than digitization.
Uploading consciousness into conventional computers would still leave us dependent on data centres, cooling systems, power grids, replacement hardware, supply chains, and engineers receiving increasingly alarming alerts at three in the morning.
That is not transcendence. That is infrastructure operations.
What I mean is an ontological exit: intelligence no longer bound to biological organisms or large mechanical systems, but existing as stable informational patterns within the deeper physical structure of the universe.
Information is not identical to energy. But it is physical. It must exist as some arrangement of matter, fields, or quantum states. It can be stored, transmitted, transformed, and destroyed only through physical processes. So there is nothing necessarily virtual about post-biological existence.
A waveform is real. A field is real. A quantum state is real.
A civilization encoded in such structures would not be pretending to exist inside a simulation. It would exist physically, just in a form radically different from organisms walking around on planets and arguing about property boundaries.
Today, we do not know whether consciousness can survive independently of the biological processes that produced it. Nor do we know whether hidden dimensions exist, much less whether they could support information processing. We certainly do not know how to fold a civilization into a proton.
But the sophon offers an extraordinary thought experiment.
In Liu’s universe, a proton is unfolded through higher dimensions, engineered into a vast computational surface, and then folded back into its tiny three-dimensional appearance.
The proton can unfold its hidden dimensions and be as big as a planet. Its hidden structure becomes usable.
Nothing in current physics tells us that this is possible. Quantum gravity remains unresolved. Some approaches, including geometrogenesis, explore whether spacetime may emerge from deeper degrees of freedom rather than being fundamental. That does not make the sophon plausible. It makes its central intuition philosophically useful: what appears elementary in ordinary spacetime may not be elementary in the deeper structure of reality.
